Bo Harper Call
We wanted to ask Bo some of his opinions on electric cars, and as someone who works on electric cars he could possibly highlight some of the darker sides of electric cars and possible failures.
Answers are summarised as he did repeat himself and get himself tangled in words
Questions:
Q1: Do you think it is harder to maintain an electric car?
A1: The only possible difficulty is electric issues, voltages can be an issue because all cars are different.
Q2: Do you think it is cheaper to MOT an electric car?
A2: Theoretically it should be cheaper as you do not need to do an emissions test, but for a hybrid it would make no difference because it still has to run in petrol mode.
Q3: Do you find electric cars are more reliable than normal petrol or diesel cars?
A3: In all honesty..... No. There are safety issues with battery voltages and motors do wear down over time. Battery Life and reliability can be an issue over time.
Q4: Is it cheaper to run an electric car?
A4: The cost of electricity isn't cheap, neither is installing a charging station at home. You also have to think about the distance of electric cars, some have a small change [You MY need a second car if you sometimes travel long distances]
Q5: Would you personally own an electric car over a fossil fuelled car right now?
A5: i feel they have to be developed a little more, the range needs to get longer. It is fine for commuting but anything else may be a struggle. They need more charging points to make it easier as you don't want to wait 45 minutes to charge and then wait another 45 minutes to charge your own car.
This was a great call with Bo, and we got some facts that we probably would have not known before this call, George did a great job with the way he asked the questions and I feel like I did a good job writing the questions to get the most out of him. We will need to probably call Bo again to let him know we want to sue what he said in the call for our piece as it would be a little unfair to use this information without his permission.
Call to Tesla
Tesla have been a pain so far to get in contact with. We have kept being sent in circles, through the
Bluewater store, The Head office phone and also the main store, but today Cailan took up the task of trying to get in contact with the PRESS OFFICE. We had already been told to contact the press office and on three separate occasions they did not reply so we wanted to take steps further to try and get permission to film in the Bluewater store. All we want to do is get some B-ROLL in the store of the cars as we feel TESLA is the car that first comes to mind when you think about electric cars and big innovation.
We did get told earlier in the day from head office that we could film at Bluewater's store at the store managers discretion however we wanted to call up and make sure. They directed us back to the Press Office and we struggled to get anywhere as they just said to email the press office, which we have done many times. They agreed to take Cailan's details and we hope that we get a response but we are not hopeful as this part has been a struggle so far.
Call to Maidstone Hyundai
About a week ago I contacted Hyundai as they said did say they sold an electric car on their website, however when on the phone they confirmed that it is not out yet, not until 2018. However they did seem to seem interested in our project and suggested their Hybrid model. I wanted to get back in contact in case this was still something they may be interested in. Unfortunately when we called we got through to someone different to last time and last time we did not given the name of the employee we talked to. This meant she could not really understand who I may have talked to, but as there where only two of them there today they could confirm it was neither of them.
They said it would be best to call back tomorrow as more staff where suppose to be in and it was more likely we can sort out a hybird car hire. If not we would love to just get some B-ROLL of the car in the showroom as it aesthetically will look exactly the same as the all electric car on the outside and pretty similar on the inside. I will phone again tomorrow and hopefully get something sorted!
Phoning our Interviewee Ajay
A little out of random whilst in our phoning session, Ajay, George's contact for an interviewee phoned us. Ajay us a friend of George's Dad and it meant we had a common link already meaning the conversation was a little more natural. He has an expertise in Electric cars and has either driven or owned every electric car on the market as well as putting together a lot of events for electric car companies such as BMW. He gave us a good idea of his expertise and we can start writing down the questions we plan to ask him and add them to our script...
Talking of our script...
We finally got started on it today... We wanted to get more contacts before we started it as well as deciding our angle of our project. As we sorted this out yesterday, we started today as we where all in as a group today and it is always better to start something as important as this in person.
Here is our very first start at the script. A lot of work has to be done but it is a good start.

This is a typical fossil fuelled car, it is what the majority of us use day to day to get around. How much does it actually cost in petrol for a daily journey? Unfortunately such a test can not be completed by a mere mortal, we have to hand over to our test driver. Some say…. oi you didn’t let me even finish the sentence...

I hope they won’t notice…
Today we are going to do a 30 mile round trip in this car and calculate how much it costs for that journey. After the trip we will be talking to an electric car dealership in how much this same journey would cost in an electric car.

Typically I get 39 mpg in this car which means this journey would cost around £6 normally but with a crew and kit in the car it could well be more.

I think the biggest misconception of electric cars is that they could not be used as a daily driver because of their small range. However Tesla’s Latest model S has a potential range of 335 miles, more realistically though it would have a range of 300 miles. However in comparison to this car which has a max range of 280 miles.

So that stops that argument about range restrictions, but the cost of electric cars is extravagant. The cheapest Electric car on the road is The Renault Twizy, however that is hard to class as a car… well

The cheapest actual electric car is the Renault Zoe, which is £18,500. However after the government's £4,500 Grant it is actually a reasonable £14,000 price tag.

However you must have to consider that you will need a charger fitted at home which won’t be cheap, starting at £500. However if you compare it to this car, 10,000 miles in this will cost you around £1,400 in petrol. To charge an electric car for a year through our research it would cost about £600 for 10,000 miles, but this does depend on make and model.

A fascinating report there with some really interesting facts. But there are still some unanswered questions that we wanted to clear up about electric cars.
We wanted to hear things straight from the horse's mouth, so we’ve got a passionate electric car expert and owner who’s going to tell us their experience with electric.

I had tried to place with the colour coding to help everyone else know what part was theirs to edit, I think I did not explain it that well so once it was done we all got stuck in - But we will finish this tomorrow, at least a first draft! We have split it up into four parts so we could all have proof that we contributed to the script. However we will go over the whole script at the end of one of the more final versions and then talk it through to see if it all makes sense.
We confirmed the Interview with Ajay for Thursday, meaning now we can start placing other things into a shoot schedule.
Here is a basic start, and we will change this and include more information.
MONDAY - Fuel consumption test
TUESDAY - B-ROLL at car dealerships & Talking to Maidstone Smart about Electric vs Petrol
WEDNESDAY - Filming day in London getting B-ROLL for channel trailer as well as main piece.
THURSDAY - Interview with Ajay (Camberley)
FRIDAY - Studio piece with Andrew as the news anchor.
Andrew got a response from the KENT FILM OFFICE, they just needed a little more information about the route and recording equipment. Andrew sent this off and then they asked for a risk assessment. Andrew did a swift job with it and got it sent back. We hope this will be confirmed for Wednesday and we can confirm the driving route and also plan that Thursday more.
A very productive day, Jo really helped us to get started on the phone calls and everything spring from there. We plan to have another long skype convo tomorrow. I feel we are really pushing ourselves in this project and making sure we get all we can from contacts and information.
