Group Discussion - Deciding our Angle & Finalizing News Order

Today George, Cailan, Andrew and I had two skype calls which lasted 5 hour but we sorted out a lot to do with our project!

Here is the plan we had before our skype call

  1. Discuss brand details
  2. Confirm target audience
  3. Finalize at least a basic shoot schedule
  4. Double check with contacts and possibly arrange backups!
  5. Narrow down filming locations
  6. Decide the ordering of our piece
  7. Decide our angle.
Brand Details & Target Audience
  • Colours: Blue/White
  • Tagline: 'Road To The Future"
  • Name: Carology (Car Technology)
  • Target Audience: Car enthusiasts who are interested in the future.
  • No particular age targeted as cars are interesting to all ages.
Hiring an electric car?

After the set back with the Smart dealership pulling out late we have have had to have a change of plan. One idea I had was that we could hire a car and use that instead, unfortunately there are no electric cars available to hire anywhere near us. We did also think we could hire a petrol car for a day and do some range and economy tests on it to see how much fuel it uses as well as the cost of it. However we feel it is unnecessary to hire a car, I feel like it may be easier for us just to use my car.

Shooting schedule?

So far it is hard to decide a shooting schedule because we need to first confirm the interview with Ajay... We decided that we should postpone any more scheduling until that is confirmed. But we have a five day plan but we need to have the interview in place and then we can slot the other 4 days around it. Here is a general of what the five days may look like.
  1. Green screen day, shooting the "in the studio" shots with andrew being the news anchor
  2. Day in London shooting B-ROLL for the film and it will be useful for the whole piece.
  3. Experiment with the car - 30 Mile challenge: How much fuel does it use? How much did it cost to run that journey? How much would an electric car cost to run? Is it worth going electric?
  4. B-ROLL of electric cars, We still have contacts with dealerships that will let us film still shots of the electric car. Also we are interested in talking to a dealer about running through the key points of electric vs fossil fuel cars.
  5. Interview day with Ajay, talking through why he loves electric cars and why they are the future, we would like to mix up this interview by possibly filming whilst driving.
Creating Social Media

We saw that some groups last year went to the length of creating additional social media. As well as creating the YouTube channel that we will upload the trailer and final piece to, we created a Twitter and Instagram account to make it more of a brand.

George setup the email and accounts whilst i started on a basic logo and background. We all have access to these accounts.

We want to create this brand and so far we have some "starting" branding which we aim to look at and improve but it is a start.

We also wanted to keep these extra social media accounts active with a few posts per week to keep anyone that does end up following interested in what we are doing.

We also want to keep our Instagram running with some behind the scenes pictures as well as our tech updates. As well as a project we want to keep a catalogue of all the interesting experiences and sights we see on this TV News journey!

Order of our piece

We have decided a basic running order for our show, this was an important step because we can now start planning a script as well as making sure we get the right contributors.

Basic Schedule

  1. Car tech montage - OOV. 2/3 Facts and quotes about electric cars. B-ROLL of technology, futuristic buildings, cars, timelapses etc with a voiceover.
  2. I will introduce the show on location (tbc) including some more facts about electric cars and the future of cars. We want a brief intro into where the car industry could be headed and possibly i could include personal opinions.
  3. Fossil fuel car test. 30 mile car test in a fossil fuelled car and we would see how much fuel it uses as well as how much money it cost. We would then ask a electric car dealer how much this same journey would cost in an electric car. How long would it be before it would be a benefit to offset the higher cost of an electric car (normally at least twice the price)
  4. Comparing a electric car to a petrol car side by side. Someone at smart should be able to do this but we do have backup choices.
  5. Interview with Ajay, talking about electric cars and why he feels electric cars are the way forward in the industry.
Places to visit and film in London

After some time thinking about the schedule we wanted to make sure we had an idea of some places to visit in London and film some B-ROLL.

On the official filmlondon website we found this which states if you have a small crew you can film at any place in london without permission however it would always be best to contact the local authorities.

Here are a list of potential locations that we came up with in out very long skype discussion.

  1. London City Airport (Not at the airport but close to see the planes flying in)
  2. Cardinal Place
  3. Canary Wharf
  4. Battersea Power Station
  5. Buildings near "Bank" Lloyds building/Gherkin
  6. Stratford and surrounding buildings
  7. Ontario Tower and the o2
  8. Technology Stores
  9. Timelapsing of cars moving
We also decided an action-plan for Tuesday.
  • Contact Tesla Main Office for possible filming in the BLUEWATER store
  • Contact Hyundai to see if they can follow up on their enthusiasm but this would be a Hybrid not an electric car
  • George to get in contact with Ajay (the interviewee)
  •  Film kent film office to check up on our application and try to get that confirmed by the end of the day
  • Sort out hopefully which day we will be in London and then create a "Map" of the locations that we want to visit in london and hopefully create a mini route.
  • Sort out train times and prices with Andrew and Cailan.
