Final Preperation for Shoot Week

Today we had a four hour skype call to discuss the final details about our shoot and also finalize the script. After our latest meeting with Helen we wanted to make sure we had our angle set. We had a good talk but we identified that helen said that we cannot have a really professional test between electric and petrol because we do not have the facilities to do so. Therefore we needed to change our angle, we decided as a group to slightly modify it to "The Future of Motoring: The Current cost of motoring". We will still do the test where I see how much fuel my car uses over a 12/15 mile journey and see how much petrol it uses and how much it costs; However we would not directly compare it to an electric car.

Whilst driving I will talk though the potential options for the future of motoring, is it petrol, hybrid or electric? I will talk through some potential possibilities and then I can compare electric vs petrol though facts and not a personal test. We have also adapted a lot of the script to flow better. It looks ok on paper but once you read it through sometimes it doesn't make sense or could be long winded. We spent a long time as a team going through and adapting it, we worked well together as a team and the script now looks much better than when it did at the start of the night.

I added some facts including the price of an electric car and and petrol car of the same make and model which is a great side by side comparison of how much more expensive an electric car can be from the offset.

I also added details about a study that a website had done to show the cost of fully "fuelling up" a petrol car and an electric car. After cracking the numbers I worked out that it cost a substantial amount less to run an electric car, however the offset is the much higher cost upfront.

Cailan did a great job to follow up something I suggested and create a kit list for each day whilst the rest of us worked on the script. Here is what cailan created (Full credit to him, i only suggested the idea)

THURSDAY (Camberley Interview with AJ);
Panasonic DVX 200 4K Camera (Studio's)
Lumix G7 4K Capable Camera (Alex's)
Sony AX53 Camera (Alex's)
2x Tripod
Fig Rig

FRIDAY (Greenscreen Work at Maidstone Studios);
Panasonic DVX 200 4K Camera (Studio's)
Canon 100D (George's)
Green-screen and Support Kit (Studio's)
2x Tripod

With this list we can have a quick look each day and not need to lug around extra kit which will mean we will should be able to get around locations quicker and also then be able to spend extra time at location through less time travelling.

The Kent Film office sent Andrew this conformation for filming and we are happy to have this as we had all had issues with KFO in the past meaning we where pessimistic if they would be able to help us.

Here is the risk assessment that we had to fill out to take out the equipment, it was cleared with helen and we have taken out the equipment ready to film this coming week!
This is the potential green screen setup for the news report. This is George's first idea. It is a great start but I raised the point that Camera 2 may catch a big shadow. I will not be around for this shoot day but I do want to give my input as best as possible as I had created a similar scene for my first university project last year.

We did also discuss the way to go from scene to scene, I brought up this clip and personally this is how I would like the show to go from News package to studio and then back to a live interview. It had a seamless feel to it, however we did not all agree so we will see on the day which one feels more natural.

Here is the final working script:

[MONTAGE START]

OOV (Graphics and B-Roll - Intro GFX/Timelapse in London?)
Andrew - “Coming up on today’s program, we discuss the future of motoring.”
OOV (GFX and Tech/Car B-Roll)
Andrew - “How much does it cost to run a car in today’s economy? What are the advantages, and what are the other options?”
OOV (GFX + Original Music + Exterior Shot of BoA Office Building?)
Andrew - “…also, we speak to an expert on electric cars to see if they are cheaper option.”
OOV - (GFX and B-Roll of Tesla Cars in Bluewater Store)

Andrew - “The electric car industry continues to find its footing with Tesla’s introduction of their Model S, capable of a range of over 250 miles.”
OOV - (GFX + Press Event Footage(?) / Images video of Elon Musk representing Tesla)

Andrew - “Elon Musk and his team over in the US continue to raise the bar in the electric automobile industry; by releasing their patents publically back in 2014, they’re helping pioneer the way to a much greener future.”
OOV - (GFX + Tesla Bluewater, Miscellaneous Garages/Dealership B Roll)

[END OF MONTAGE]
Andrew - “Later on in the program we will be on location at some electric car dealerships, as well as speaking to an electric car enthusiast to get there take on the subject.”
PTC (in studio) \/
But first we wanted to look at the average cost of a car journey in today’s economy, how accurate that is and how affordable it is compared to other options.

INSERT FACTS HERE
Mid shot
Andrew - “Our reporter Alex Baldwin went to see how much fuel a modern petrol car uses in a typical 30 mile journey.”

Alex Baldwin - Fossil fuel car test - how much fuel does it use? [2:20 Approx.]

SYNC/COMM
OOV
Alex - ”Have you ever thought how much you actually spend on petrol, how much does daily commute cost? We’re going to run my car for 15 miles to see how much a small commute like this may cost”
PTC (MLS Alex Next To Car)
Alex - “According to Abarth’s official figures this car will do 43.5 Miles Per Gallon, of course that will be on a rolling road in a controlled environment but we want to see how close to that figure we can achieve over our run”
PTC (“Alex” getting into car and sitting down)

B-ROLL Of Route?
Alex - “We’re starting of at this car park in Penenden Heath Car park and will be taking the 6  mile trip down the lanes to Capstone country park.”
PTC Alex in Car

B-ROLL of car on the road

B-ROLL OF Alex Filling Up Car
Alex - “So, Typically I get 39 mpg in this car which means this journey would only cost around £4 normally but with a crew and kit in the car it could well be more.”

Alex - “So, The reason why most of us are probably sceptical about electric is because buying and using buying and using petrol is so simple. There is a petrol station every five minutes and it only takes a moment to fill up.

However, resources are starting to decline and have been for quite some time. Several sources estimate that in the next 50 years we could be out of fossil fuels to power our cars. Meaning that an alternative could be needed much earlier than expected.
PTC Alex in car

B-ROLL of car on the road

Alex - “So, what are the alternatives to petrol? Well electric seems to be what most people see as the future. But let’s compare the basic petrol version of the volkswagen golf to its electric cousin. The petrol version costs just under £18,000 while the electric model is a tad under 28,000, and that is WITH the grant the government gives to you for buying electric. You then need to factor in costs for a home charging station and extra costs on your electricity bill.

B-ROLL OF Renault Zoe
Source:
Alex - “So how much would it cost you to run a electric car. Research by “The Green Age . co . uk” says that to fully charge Renault’s Electric car the Zoe it would cost you £4.92, while filling up a similarly sized Petrol Renault Clio it would cost you £53”
PTC Alex in car

B-ROLL of car on the road
Sources:
Alex - “However you must have to consider the range of both of these cars. The Electric Zoe has a range of 186 miles while the Petrol Clio has a range of 504 Miles.
PTC Alex in car

B-ROLL of car on the road
Alex - “So when you do the numbers, doing 504 miles in the electric car would cost you £13.30, still much cheaper than a petrol but it does make you think about the range of electric cars, it may not be an option for people who have to make long journeys regularly.”

Alex - “So now we have completed our 12 mile journey, let’s see what figures we have got. Ok so, (x) MPG which is around (£x) at the pumps which isn’t too bad. Of course electric would be cheaper in the long run, but do you have the extra £10,000 to put up front?”

INTERVIEW WITH AJAY: [1:25 Approx.]

PTC
Andrew/Cailan -“An insightful report there, so now Alex Baldwin is Live on location with an electric car expert, who can hopefully give his view on the future of motoring, Alex.
Live: PTC
Alex-”Thanks Cailan/Andrew, yes I’m here with AJAY he is a passionate electric car expert, who we’ll be hearing from shortly”.
PTC
Andrew/Cailan- “Yes but before that we understand that you’ve been speaking to some car mechanics about maintaining electric cars and how they compare to petrol.”
PTC
Alex- “Yes we wanted to get some further expert opinions on this topic, so we spoke to car mechanics Bo and Nigel who brought up some interesting points and had this to say.”
OOV or other graphics.
Alex - “Working with electric cars can be quite simple on one hand, since your only have a battery and a motor to work with. However if there is an electrical fault then it could become much more difficult to fix costing the owner a lot of time, money and hassle.”

Alex - “We also asked about reliability and breakdowns for electric cars. With standard cover its free to call out an engineer if you break down on a journey; however when we spoke to one on the phone they said “Most of the calls we get from electric car owners, unlike petrol owners, come from those who can't get them started in the first place due to a battery or electric fault”. In which case you’d have to pay for it to be taken to a garage and potentially a replacement battery.”

“You also have to bare in mind that although it happens over a long period of time, electric cars do suffer from battery degradation, and if this were to happen outside of warranty you’d have to pay for a replacement yourself.”
PTC
Alex - “So as you can see they brought up some interesting points there that make you consider weather electric really is an affordable option. But here to give his opinion on the subject is, passionate electric car nut AJ.”
Wide Shot (two shot)
“So AJ tell us a bit about yourself.”
