Critical Perspectives - Globalisation, Cultural Imperialism and Cultural Appropriation

Globalization refers to "the compression of the world and the intensification of consciousness of the world as a whole" (R. Robertson, Globalization, 1992)

Has globalisation made the world smaller? Not physically but representationally? Everyone can find eg. BBC News

Global Dominance explored
  • The extent to which certain political economies dominate the world by process by which  global media organisations.
  • Thus the major media organisations drown out smaller regional outlets.
  • US style journalism is homogenising world media coverage becoming missionaries of corporate capitalism
  • Has the potential to establish a dominant GLOBAL CULTURE.
A good example of media giants that do not just dominate the country that they where established by the entire world is BBC and SKY. they have a viewership all over the world which may drown out smaller local station.

Consequences of cultural imperialism
  • During the 1980s there was a massive amount of interest and reports about the horrible famine that took place in Ethiopia. However at the same time there was something equally as bad going on in Brazil that did not get hardly any coverage. The reason for this was that there was not the video from Brazil that would be of a benefit to the media companies.
  • CNN have been accused to stirring up "Compassion Fatigue" through their reporting of global human suffering.
  • Grenfall is another way that globalisation has made a difference. The massive amount of reports on this subject did mean that the government had to do something about it.
Generic formats of a news report
  • Dramatic tone
  • Half an hour duaration
  • Generically formatted
However is not always truly global. They always end up going to the same people covering the same type of topics. However with countries like China are now becoming a powerhouse meaning the way media is presented has to be changed to be truly global.

The media can influence and enhance stories to convey cultural differences, as well as sort the bad news which may inforce cultural prejudices.

Is it a small world?
With the increased use of social media make the world more interconnected? Everyone can hop on social media and form and type an opinion from what they have read. This is also global as pretty much every country is on social media in one way or another. As it is global we can catch up with global news much quicker as social media is instant and TV News may take more time to fact check and publish.

Cultural Appropriation is an important issue. When trying to adapt something to what your vision may be you have to be careful about the way you adapt it. People are worried that movies are being whitewashed. For example a asian actor should have cast, but instead the actor was white because that particular white actor may have been more well known. Hence it would be a more successful (financially) than if a more culturally appropriate actor was cast.

Most people agree that the media can change your opinion of a certain situation. We also have to be aware that there are only a small amount of companies that are feeding us this information meaning we are only getting news from a particular point of view. The media is "Putting pictures in our head" Water Lippman 1922.

Always think about what is and what is not included in the story. In some scenarios it is as important to look at what is not included in the report as what is. because key facts could be being held from us to give us a tinted opinion on a particular story.

"There is a lot of choice but they are the all the same" The same brands are always at the top. They are normally all saying the same thing as well.

No matter how much knowledge you may have on a subject, As long as something is relevant you may be able to exploit it and maybe make people change their bias. Even though you may have many more facts on another topic, because it is not as relevant, it won't be heard as much.

Group Work: Going more in depth with our questions "We are all journalists now"

How does globalisation affect your essay question?

We used to only get fed a certain opinion, but with the ride of social media it means we will get more opinions from more different angles. Globalisation means that we can now hear these stories from all over the world from citizen journalists via social media.

What evidence can you find that it is impacting the story you are analysing?

Are certain people's voices being drowned out by bigger voices?

In old term media this was the case. Certain people dominated and others where drowned out because they did not have the power of the others. However with globalisation it means that people can voice their opinion on social media to the world and the major players in old fashioned news do not get as much of a voice, especially to the younger generation. Most people under 30 are on social media and usually get their news from that. I think less and less people watch news in the traditional way meaning the companies that had built up this powerhouse do not have as much influence. However social media is still controlled by someone. Twitter's news is still pushed by someone, but this news does seem to be more balanced with less of a political view.

RE-CAP
• GLOBALISATION within the media has the potential to ‘export’ cultures, values and ideologies.
• It can lead to globally dominant media brands which may ‘drown out’ other voices.
• It also has the potential to view the world as a whole rather than by regional boundaries – interconnected and interdependent - therefore making the world feel smaller.
• The media remain an important force for FRAMING the issues and ways of understanding those issues around the world, affecting how we see ourselves and one another.
• The necessities of time-based media are partly to blame for the over simplistic/abbreviated storytelling which can occur.
• Commercial pressures can exacerbate attempts to re-dress the balance, with media owners and creators unlikely to take ‘risks’ and conflict with dominant representations of the world.
• Consensus emerges from the main media outlets rather than real choice/diversity.

CAROLOGY NEWS - Final Cut

Here is the final cut of our project. The 4k version will be uploaded soon when we have time to render it in the highest possible quality. It has been a long process but we are very happy with the final result!

TV NEWS - Evaluation "Carology - The Cost of Motoring"

The Initial Idea and Production process
We started throwing ideas about over the summer as we knew it was a quick turnaround for this unit but when Andrew joined the group in September we where back to square one as we wanted a project and idea that we where all happy with. It always seems the way with such a brief at university that finding that initial idea is always the hardest bit. I came up with three of the four initial ideas but after looking into the others further it seems they would not be viable in some way. (For example...)

  • Andrews idea about the Beatles could not go any further because after a good amount of time he had not had a response from any of his initial emails so early on we decided that we should scrap this idea.
  • My idea about motorsport was initially the strongest idea and I did have some contacts in this field so the group did feel this could be the way forward. However this idea was very dependant on getting permission to film at Brands Hatch but that permission didn't come through in adequate time. However I get a response to film in Germany for a DTM driver but as some of the group could not travel abroad we could not pursue that as a group but I am happy that i did follow up this lead personally!
  • The last idea was about transport delays which cailan did try to follow up but only got an email back about 3 weeks ago so we did not follow this up, but in a way we kept with the transport theme in our Carology project!
Our main idea started by looking on BBC news and looking at the main page. It's annoying that I don't have the story to hand but i saw a story about electric cars and that grabbed my attention initially and we talked about how could develop this idea. We looked into what sold electric cars and how many models where on the market right now and we realised that electric cars are starting to take over and become very important in the future of motoring. The initial idea was to pitch an electric car against a petrol car and test which is better and what the costs are for each as well as the sustainability.

After our meeting with Jo we did decide this would be the best subject to follow, she thought there where great possibilities for this topic. Jo told us to get on the phone and start contacting car dealerships and see what they could do for us. George and I got on the phone in Tesco Car Park to see if the local car dealerships would possibly let us borrow an electric car for our news piece. We did get mixed responses from our phone calls but we did get somewhere with SMART in Maidstone.  We ended up getting solid conformation from Smart that we could borrow an electric car for our shoot but as the weeks went on leaving us with a problem about what the package could be about. We had to change the angle of the piece accordingly, we changed from basically promoting electric cars and how good they are to putting a more negative slant on electric cars and showing how cheap it is to run a petrol car. We chose to use my car for this test because it is the newest and at the same team the group thought I would be the best presenter because of my knowledge in cars and motoring. I was obviously appreciative that they thought this but at the same time nervous as I had not done anything like this before!

We also had to decide on a "Live" segment for our project. We got a inkling early on that George's dad had a contact we could talk to, a guy who is obsessed with electric cars. After planning that interview and shooting it we had a meeting with Helen which changed that idea. It was not seen as live and we needed more of a reason to be on location. I came up with the idea of going to Brands hatch to speak to a driver about what his thoughts on the future of motorsport are. We did not have much time to plan so going there without a contact was risky but we met two great guys who gave us good interviews, and Jason's interview was the one we went with. it felt more natural and also had much more of a reason to be live. We happily followed Helen's advice and got the re shoot in good time to edit it.

We also had to decide who was going to present in the studio. I was torn because both Andrew and Cailan did really want to do the studio presenting. With no offense to Andrew I did feel Cailan was stronger and in the first take that was the case. But as we had to re film due to changing the live interview I thought as director it would be fair to give andrew another chance and he performed much better second time around. Of course there where still mess ups but as I know from presenting, that stuff happens!

We had talked a little bit about roles before filming. It seemed the group wanted me to be the main presenter as I said which I was happy about after we had discussed what we where going to be doing. Andrew and Cailan ended up being the anchors and George was left to focus on editing. I was kind of appointed Director by the group (I assume through the way I had pitched the original idea as well as my expertise in the field we are filming in) which I was happy to take up but I could see George was not as happy with this group decision. After I explained to George what I had in mind for the project he was less worried about me being the director. George asked to be the editor which was fair because of the work he has done previously. Cailan was appointed as lead camera operator through the shoots thanks to my belief in his abilities through working with him in the documentary unit last year. As none of us had worked with Andrew since the first project we where unsure what his main strengths where but he suggested audio and music would be what he would focus on, which covered most areas.

All of the shoot days went well in their own ways. We got all the footage we needed from each day and when we did have to re shoot it was not too much of a hassle. I would like to point out I was present for every shooting day that was included in the final cut. I only missed one day due to following up a personal project through a contact I had found earlier on in this unit, however this shoot day had to be re filmed through suggestions made from Helen. I was happy about this because the original footage from the green screen day was out of focus and not great, when I had control of the video equipment like I had for the rest of the project, more time was spent on setting it up hence the better video quality. George and I did get a little worried on some of the shoot days because we where the main two on every day meaning we where worried about the commitment of the others but we made good of every day. The main struggle was re-shooting the live interview with two of us was very hard considering last time we had all four of us. I do wish on that day one of the others would have at least helped. I think I did a pretty good job as a director and I did get very positive feedback from all of the group. George had been worried that I had been controlling over the directing but I did say to him that I do have the most knowledge here, so it would make sense for me to lead it. However when other opinions where raised that differed to mine, I was always accommodating to them and if i thought it was a good idea i would go with it as i think criticism only helps us improve as a group.

Into the edit, George took the lead with this one. I wanted to take a back seat but at the same time I wanted to keep upto date with the project. I was present on all but one of the edit days and I did give George the space to work when he asked for it. I think early on He felt like I was peering over his shoulder monitoring what he was doing but in reality I was just trying to help the best I could with the experience I have had as an editor. I think George felt like I was trying to steal his thunder, but it was the other way round to this when filming, I always tried my best to listen to new ideas from all members of the team, if i liked them or not. George 's and my personalities do clash from time to time and George does struggle taking criticism meaning I found it hard to give my feedback without him being offended by it. I tried to explain it wasn't personal, I just think honesty is the best policy when it comes to group work.  However, this may seem like it was a shambles but in reality it was not. We did clash over certain decisions in the edit but we always did find a compromise. I was always there to help George and Cailan was there about half of the edit days as well.
What worked in this project?
  • I felt like we got a lot of footage thanks to 5 cameras being used and also thanks to the work planning each shoot day which was mostly done by myself, cailan and george.
  • Our script was split into four parts in an online document, meaning we had an equal contribution and we all wrote the parts in which we spoke, meaning it was more natural when it was being said.
  • All of our footage bar one or two shots where perfectly in focus and colour corrected properly meaning when it came to the dit we did not have to spend much time adjusting the clips colours.
  • Our B ROLL Was interesting and informative as well as helping tell the story that we are trying to tell.
  • I would say on the most part my directing was good and the team worked well on the shoot days that they attended. We always got a lot of work done on each day which is proven by the amount of footage that we have got
  • I would say while my presenting was not perfect we did get there eventually and it seemed much more natural than I had expected when I originally said I would do the role which I am happy with!
  • George did a great job with the edit. Even though altering opinions did sometimes mean we had some tension in the group, it was for the best because we kept pushing ourselves to make a better product.
  • George and I did a very good job updating the social media consistently, I focused on the Instagram and George focused on the Twitter, but there was some overlap when we where helping each other out.
What did not work so well in this project?
  • I think communication between Andrew and the rest of the group could have been much better in the project. We have a group chat in which we put all new ideas and thoughts in and mostly it is just myself, george and cailan. Andrew did not really communicate online or verbally in the way we would have wanted in the project. He ended up writing blog posts that we would have to read to know what he was thinking. It was a very inefficient way of doing things and we would have all appreciated if andrew would have been more upfront with his ideas.
  • Our whole project is too long, which is the main critique we have of it. The whole length is around 8 minutes which is excluding what the anchor says, at least 2 minutes over the time limit. Helen said this would lower our grade but it is something we have to mention because it does show our planning before, in the script could have been better. If we had timed out every mini segment we would have probably been much closer to the allotted time.We realise that this is an error and that is one of the main issues with the project.
  • We did have issues with the lights casting a shadow in the green screen shoots but that was rectified after some time adjusting them. This did waste time when trying to film the final studio anchor pieces but we did get there in the end. But in hindsight we would have set it all up and tested before shooting.
  • We had a few people drop out, mainly smart, meaning we did have to adjust the package segment in a little bit of a hurry
  • Andrew did not have the commitment that the rest of us had in this project. Albeit sometime with genuine reasons not to come in, a lot of the time the reasons where farcical. He did not turn up to many edit days meaning mostly George had to edit the sound which he was suppose to do. I know he will go on to make excuses that he was never given a chance to do this, but he only turned up to one edit day before submission and did not give any input on this day. The whole group is very disappointed in the way Andrew had conducted himself, resorting to mean and sometimes personal attacks on his blog. He has done this from the start of the project which is very disappointing, he even bragged to us that he did a similar thing in the last unit to get a good grade. Unfortunately he has a way of always playing the victim in every situation which always makes him seem innocent.
What could be developed if we where to do this project again?
  • I would have loved to have done the original package comparing a petrol to an electric car, and with more time I do feel that it was achievable. However this was a challenge to try get everything planned, filmed and edited in around 6 weeks meaning that was probably never going to be an option.
  • I would love to have the chance to present again. It really brought be out of my shell and It did actually feel pretty natural by the end of it. If I felt that way at the start, possibly the package would have been stronger!
  • I would have liked to have changed some parts in the edit (please don't kill me george) but as i know George spent so much time on it, it would have only made more tension to say these points very late on.
  • I would also like to have developed as a director. I probably was controlling in some ways and that may have meant the others felt like they could not voice an opinion, which I do regret. But I am happy with what we have created and everyone can give themselves a pat of the back for all the effort they put in.

What did I learn whilst making this project?
  • Being on the other side of the camera is very different. When george was directing me as a presenter, I was finding some things being said very patronising. While we sorted this out as a group it now gives me the other perspective for future shoots, in the way to treat your cast. As in some situations i did feel very uncomfortable.
  • How to place people in their best roles was key. i think we did a very good job at allocating roles to the person who suited them best Of course there was some overlap, but that only made us push ourselves and make a better show because of it.
  • I definitely learned who I can rely on, when it comes to turning up to shoot days and being active in the project. We did struggle on occasions when it was only 2/3 of us and it shows to me at least who I would want to work with again in the future.
  • I also got more confident at picking up the phone and contacting people. I had always relied on emails before but now I realise getting on the phone can save you a lot of time. Most of the time all the nerves come before the call, not whilst you are in it.
  • Pushing each other (maybe sometimes too far) to get the best product was one of the biggest outcomes for me. Just because you think you know best, doesn't mean you are always right. In a way I liked being challenged because I like hearing different ways of doing things to improve as a creator!
Conclusion

I enjoyed this unit a lot. I got to work on a project that I am proud of and in a interesting subject for me personally. I got to work with new equipment and work with people that I like working with. I think due to the restrictions that we had we did a great job pulling it all together, and when something went wrong we where always super positive in making it good again. I am happy with what I contributed, George is a great editor, Cailan is just an all round legend and Andrew gives it his all when he is here. Through the stress and the disagreements, we did it! We created something that we can be proud of, it's not perfect but we had a great time making it and have learned a lot more about each other as well. Anyway, I guess that is it! Hope I can do more stuff like this in the future!

Carology News - Editing Process Part 6 - THE FINALE :)

Today was the final edit day, which we where all happy about because we finally see the final product! I went in to provide any assistance possible to George while Cailan did the channel trailer and the website at home while Andrew was busy the whole day but did try his best to get  new music track to us before the final render tonight.

While I was not the editor I do have a long history editing so I did always have my best intentions when helping George. However today we did have a big disagreement over one segment later on (the map, half way marker). This was obviously hard to overcome but after I had voiced my opinion I could see that the tension was building so we tried our best to cool the tension and leave each other be for a bit. I do apologise to George because my thoughts probably came across in a way he did not like meaning that it created unnecessary tension.

George has been great in the edit so far and after a little time doing our own thing the tension was back to normal and we could continue the edit. He had added some really cool graphics to back up what is being said in the voiceover. This was a little thing that Helen pointed out so we wanted to make sure that we put that right. I really like that George has done such a good job with keeping with the colour scheme.

Another thing that Helen mentioned that we wanted to rectify was adding a visual clue about the prices of filling up an electric and petrol car. Once again this is scaled so you can see that the petrol is a lot more money to fill. He also added a "ker ching" sound effect so that you know we are talking about money in this situation!

We also added Overlays to all of the segments to let the viewer know the names of each person that appeared on screen. Myself, Ajay and Jason all got a little screen card. George also added the live simple with the spinning tyre. I really liked this particularly. It takes a good looking interview into a professional looking interview. I am really really happy in the way George has transformed this edit from even earlier today.
Colour correcting was also needed on a few clips, mostly the big Panasonic which is strange because it is the most expensive by far but also was by far the hardest to film with and edit with. Only a few clips needed colour correcting though as it was mostly filmed with my cameras which surprisingly created better footage than the big camera!
I also edited the credits, it was nothing major but I did this while George was having lunch, making sure not to disrupt is rhythm. I added text in the Molot font that is consistent throughout and also added a little clip of each of us after each name card just so you could tell who was who (Not for university, more for if people see it on Youtube!)
Also one last thing I wanted to do was make all of the audio the same level. We decided -6db was what we would go with for the whole edit and it did not take long to do that. I also made sure the whole project was in stereo not mono as headphone users would dislike that a lot of the project until this point was mono audio.

I liked my contribution today, I did overstep George's boundary and I did apologise to him for doing that. He also apologised for snapping at me. It's crunch time and tensions where high but we did end up with a good product and I am happy with it.  I left because at 7pm as I wanted George to be able to make any final changes without me there. It means he can make the final decisions and I cant say anything. I am happy it is done! We can be happy with what we have achieved!

Carology News - Social Media and Website

While we where editing Cailan created the website for our project. We had been keeping our social media active since the start of the project but had not created the website, but Cailan is a whizz and managed to get one set up and filled out in 6-7 hours.

Cailan kept messaging us throughout the day with updates with the website and we gave our opinions and it was slightly adapted but we where pretty happy right from the outset. It evolved and looked a little more authentic after a few setting changes with the transitions but I really like it now. Cailan did a great job!

Cailan also added a few blog posts! Slightly adapted versions of some of the ones we had created for the project anyway but we wanted to fill the site with something interesting!

Weblink: https://cailancook98.wixsite.com/carologynews

I also have been keeping on top of the social media. I have been regularly uploading to the Instagram account with pictures from the shoots as well as pictures relevant to what our project is focusing on.

I had also been stepping up the Twitter posts that George had been maintaining while he was editing. He had a lot on his plate so I thought it would be helpful for him for me to do some of the social stuff for him that he did not have time for.

Cailan has also uploaded the channel trailer to our YouTube channel! He did a great job over 2/3 days to get it together. Just over 30 seconds it includes a lot of info about what we are planning for the channel. We are also excited to finally upload the full video to our YouTube Channel tomorrow.

Here is the channel intro, created by Cailan.

Carology News - Editing Process Part 5 & Refilming the Studio Piece

Today was a very important day to pull everything together for the project. We had our studio re shoot. This was vital because without re shooting this scene our whole piece would not make any sense. We got in and Andrew and Cailan did some practice run throughs while George and I set up all the equipment.

George and I did struggle with the shadows, especially now we had two presenters it made dealing with shadows much worse than last time. We did play around with the lights and what seemed to work best was 3 lights based very close to the camera and that did minimise the shadows.

The heat that was created from the three tungsten lights plus a LED was immense. I really did feel for the lads presenting because it was really tough with the heat and also the lights where really bright. However once we got into recording it did start off pretty well. Cailan had learned his lines well and was very confident and nailed most lines first time. Andrew did struggle more, like last time. Even though we planned to just use Cailan as a news anchor but Andrew said last time he was only bad because he had not learned his lines so we wanted to give him a chance. We did have to do a number of takes because of the mistakes, George and I did not mind having as many takes as possible as long as we got it right. We did see the energy sap as it went on though, understandably with the conditions they where trying to present in.

We also had a problem with the clip mics. They were picking up a horrible amount of distortion and Ferg was in a meeting so we did not have the opportunity to ask him what was going on. I then came up with the idea of placing the shotgun mic just out of view of the camera to pick up the presenters audio. While this is not idea considering our time constraints I suggested it was better to get this recorded then wait for an unone amount of time for the wireless microphones to be fixed.

We did finally get some good takes, it ended up taking around three hours but we where happy with the final result. I also spent a good amount of time setting the camera up properly, so when we got it on the PC it looked really crisp and I do have to say if I had not spent that time we may have got footage which was slightly washed out and out of focus.

Once we got a basic sequence together we showed it to Helen who could give her opinions on it so we could get around to editing this. Unfortunately Cailan and Andrew left before this meeting meaning George and I had to make big decisions for the team once again.
Here are the points made in this meeting:

  • Clean Audio (Andrew was suppose to do this)
  • Show Alex live on location in Intro
  • Add Graphics (Alex and Jason name tags as well as text on screen)
  • Blur numberplate
  • Audio levels and transitions
  • Colour correction
  •  B ROLL of Volkswagen Golf
  • Audio distorted in voice over parts
  • 2 Shot in AJAY interview so you know I am here (and audio cuts off at the end)
  • Up Ajays audio level
  • Cut around Cailan looking at the floor
  • Abarth stats pop up individually
  • OOV Before stating in car shots
  • ker chingggg $$$$$ sound effects
  • On screen text to back up what is being said in the voiceover in package
  • A lot of data so may need to be freeze framed and displayed on screen
  • Ajay should be put in the package
  • Add voice over to add Ajay into the package
We started work on this list but we are aware that we still need to create a website and a channel trailer. Cailan said he can do this as he is not going to be in tomorrow so he would do both of these from home. Andrew said he could not make it in tomorrow when we really need him to be in helping us with audio which he was suppose to have done but has not. Yet once again we have been let down by him which is frustrating because he is a really great person but has just let us down on numerous amounts of occasions so far in this unit and we as a team are disappointed on the way he has handled it.

I have completed a retake of my audio for the package as it was distorted in the recording that I did previously at the studios, and I have also recorded the audio that was needed to link Ajay into the package. Helen said that we did not need to worry so much about the running time. We just need to state in the evaluation that this was a mistake on our part that we had to run over the suggested time because of things taking more time than we expected.

Today was a success. When we where there at the same time we worked really well together and got a lot done. When it was just George and I we did still keep motoring on and got a lot done but it does always get tougher when it is only two of us because the conversation normally only does one way or the other. With at least three people we would have the extra outlet to bounce an idea off of. George has also nearly completed the map of the route which is fantastic and I did a little bit of arranging of the clips so the audio starts playing before I come into view in the package, just to make the flow better as well as shortening the overall time!

Today was also the first time in about a week directing which was great for me personally. I think I did a good job at telling the lads what my ideas where as well as how i was planning on implementing them. The filming process went smoothly barring the retakes for the slip ups. I think the quality of the footage was better than last week's as well which was probably down to there being four of us not three. I also have more expertise in the video recording rather than editing so I wanted to make sure my full knowledge and skills where on show today! Happy with the progress and looking forward to the final day of editing tomorrow. I will give George a few hours by himself like I have done most days so far so that George can concentrate and put things into the place that he feels right.

One more day. One more day....

Carology News - Editing Process Part 4 Sam's Opinion & Adding New Interview

Today we continued to edit the project. I have been really ill the last few days and I still am, but I wanted to give all my support to the edit because I knew if I did not show up today it would be just George by himself and he may want a second opinion and not be able to ask anyone in our group. I arrived about an hour after George did so I could give him some space and let him put something together. When I got there, there was a basic NEW interview put in place with Formula ford racer Jason.

After I had given a few opinions on it and we had slightly adjusted the close up shots we then had a meeting with Sam who gave us a few pointers for our work.

  • Tidy Audio, possibly with transitions. Also audio levels need to be finalised. -18 db
  • Change opening sequence to Car, Bus, Train then Plane
  • White Balance properly when we re-do the studio piece
  • Possibly shorten driving sequence, try to find natural end points.
  • Lose the shot of opening the car from the inside.
  • Find one or two segments from the Ajay interview to include in studio piece.

I also picked up that the voice sync in the interview with the second camera was not quite in line with the original audio. Sam's feedback though was positive, much like Helen's he liked my presentation and also liked the whole car test package. He felt the Ajay interview however did sap the enjoyment out of the piece. This gave myself and George a bit of thinking to do. We wanted to select one moment from the Ajay piece that we can interweave into the studio piece with an introduction from Andrew or Cailan. We settled on a line where Ajay talks about right now being the right time to buy an electric car. We thought this provide good balance of our news piece, with some negatives and some positives in relation to electric cars.

George came up with the idea of having text over the part where i drive away in the package. I was unsure of this idea at first but as we have done so well with the rest of the edit, we found a common ground. My idea was the car wiping the text off the screen as I drive out of shot. It keeps the shot more fluid and keeps the movement up. Before I was unsure because it was very static and I felt it did kind of sap the enjoyment out of the piece. After George had edited this to wipe as I drove off, I really liked the idea. With key figures about the car it reinforces to the viewer some of the stats that will be relevant to the test that we are conducting.

While George wanted to create a backdrop for the news anchor, I wanted to edit a couple of things. I wanted to write the text that Andrew reads over in the package segment, we edited this to be a little shorter as the second part of what Andrew said was not really needed. With the text on the screen it feels much more news like. It did not take me too long to create this file with a blurred out background of Andrew next to a car, but I still think it needs work if we want to use it. I do feel the font needs to be changed but have struggled to find one that I think works and looks professional.

I also added in the footage that I shot of the cars going around Brands Hatch and added them into the live interview segment. I chose ones that where steady and also clear and at the same time fitted in as best that I could with what Jason was saying in the interview. Jason gave us a great interview meaning we don't need to cut away too much and I have probably added in too much B ROLL right now, but we can easily take it out. We also noticed an issue with the wide angle on the tripod in the live interview. As George was trying to operate 2 cameras at once we did struggle to know if they where both working properly. It looks like the ISO was left too high on the wide angle meaning that it is fuzzy and does look a little odd. It is not too bad but we are trying our best to not use too much of the wide angle because of this issue. Once again though, there is not much we could have done as George was busy on camera 1 and i was busy presenting. It was very hard with both of us.

George stayed late and nearly finished the background for the news anchor piece. It is looking very good, but it originally has a blue carpet as well and we did point this out to george saying this is a little vibrant, we suggested a slightly less crazy colour and while it does look better now, we still may need to adjust it to look more realistic and to colour screen. and we all have to appreciate George's dedication to the edit. While I want to respect his boundaries and give him space in the edit, he always does go the extra mile to get stuff done, I hope everyone would feel I did similar while directing.

Development of the Studio Script

As we had to re film the studio segment we had to change the script as well to adjust to the new live piece that has been filmed at Brands Hatch. Cailan and Andrew where tasked to adjust a very basic script created by George. They needed to put this into their own words. As the director I did not want to interfere too much with what they adjusted as I wanted it to be natural for them to say in front of the camera.

After some discussion about what words would be best this is the final script that we came up with. We are happy with the result and hope that it will be easy to perform in front of camera!

Shoot Day 6: Carology News - "How Much Does Motoring Cost" (Live Interview RE SHOOT)

After our meeting with Helen we wanted to take her advise and re film the interview. After looking back at the Ajay interview, we realised that it did look very set up and very un-live. This meant we had to think of a new idea for the live interview.

We decided to go to Brands Hatch and talk to a racing driver about his thoughts on the cost of motoring as well as motorsport and that if motorsport could be going electric in the next few years. We went to brands hatch without anyone to interview because of the tiny amount of time we had to think about this, but we had a good idea and some great questions meaning that we were very confident that we could go up to someone and get a great interview.

Unfortunately today it was just myself and George today, having to operate sound, 2 cameras and presenting. This left us in a very very tough situation. Cailan had a family dinner that he had to attend which is fair, but Andrew was also busy meaning it was tough for us. It did make George and I frustrated that we did not have someone else to help us out today because it was very very tough to get all the cameras  and sound set up properly. We did a little sketch on a napkin about how we wanted to conduct the interview. Very classy.

I had been to Brands Hatch numerous amounts of times before meaning I knew the location but we did want to reccie it again before shooting. We walked around the paddock and discussed areas that could be a possibility, and others that may not be. Eg: Dangerous or loud (like a generator). I suggested to George that he introduce us as he is good with words and he did a good job of finding two people to interview.

Nonetheless George and I did a really good job of finding two people to interview and then setting up in a very professional way. We talked to two racing drivers, Firstly Stuart who raced in the Formula Fords and then Jason who also raced in the Formula Fords. We talked to both drivers for about 10 minutes before the interviews because we wanted to get both of the drivers before we did our 2 minute interview. Once we had got to know the drivers we started the interviews.

Both of these interviews did go well, The first interview with Stuart was a little more awkward as some of his responses where very sharp and I found it hard to come up with a good response when the answer was so short. The interview was also a little bit longer than we expected, around 3 min 30 seconds so it was probably going to be unusable in our show because that is vastly overrunning our time limit set by Helen.

The second interview with Jason went a lot better, I honestly felt this could have been even better than the Ajay interview. Jason gave us some great answers as well as being a very interesting character. He was really friendly as well being great on camera. He answered the 4 questions in around 2:20 which is much closer to the 2 minute time that we have been challenged to do.

After the interviews had taken place and we felt like that was good enough to use, we took down the contact details of both drivers so we could send them the final footage and then had a quick lunch and discussed what we should do.

We decided to get some shots of both of the drivers out on track so that we could overlay the footage over the interview to possibly cover up when i look down at my phone to look at the question or when George changes positions and the camera is shaky. We took down the car numbers after the interviews as well as what races they where racing in so we could make sure we focused on them to get the footage of them out on track.

After the lunch break we headed out to focus on Stuart and Jason's cars and I got some great footage of them out on track while George was getting some pictures of them out on track so that we could send them to the drivers in case they wanted to use them. We wanted to give something back to the drivers as a thank you for letting us five minutes of their time.

After we had got all the footage that we wanted we decided to head back to George's and look at the footage and get it into both of our laptops. We where impressed with both interviews but the second interview was shot better as well as being a better interview in itself. It was closer to the time limit and also George did a great job especially with the second interview with the shot as we had a good two shot in a tripod (because nobody else helped us we had to have one on a tripod) but George was handheld and got some close ups.

To conclude the day I have to say I am very happy with how it went. With only two of us doing the job of four people I think we can give ourselves a pat on the back. George worked like crazy to get the best shots and I felt my presentation was good as well. Especially as I have a lot of interest in motorsport it probably made it easier for me to product a natural interview. When we filmed the cars in track I think I did a good job with that. I have been filming race events since i was like 10 years old, so in a way this was pretty natural to me.

The audio was also great on all parts of the shoot as well. The tascam was capturing great audio from the interviews and the

shotgun microphone that I have on my camcorder with a wind filter got good audio from the cars out on track.

We now though, have to re film the studio report and we have got that booked for next Tuesday. We are thinking that it may be possible for Andrew and Cailan to both present the news report. Andrew was disappointed that he messed up in the last shoot and we thought that he deserved to have another chance now we are re filming it. Andrew just needs to make sure he adapts the lines before shoot day because he complained last time that he did not know the lines but he had not adapted the lines to suit how he would say it. We need a flawless shoot on Tuesday where it goes smoothly with no hiccups. Both Andrew and cailan need to edit the script beforehand so that it is natural right away.
