Critical Perspectives: Intertextuality and Authenticity


  • Creating Meaning: study of media not only creates meaning but creates an understanding of the audience
  • Media's impact on society in terms of ability to frame, inform and influence. 
Texts do not exist in isolation but instead are naturally influenced by other works. Thus any work is repetition and transformation.

Therefore there are traces if other works in any "new" work. May include references, include certain conventions, include certain genre conventions. 

However, genres can evolve. As time goes on certain things may be used in a genre when they may have used to.

This creates a more complex and dynamic relationship between the audience and the media text. 

Authenticity and Truth
News content revolves around authenticity and fact
How reliable are they?
How accurate is the media product of the original material?
News: Ethics

What are the challenges of storytelling in both TV and NEWS Journalism?
  1. Budget
  2. Ethics
  3. What is the truth?
  4. Different versions of the event?
  5. Time
What does new media do to change news?
  1. Can be spread much quicker
  2. Lies and fake news can be spread without fact checking
  3. We are more active in the story, we can be involved in the news unlike before.
Information is filtered and retold. What is the impact of this?

Misrepresentation, slander and libel are potential charges which could result.
